Participants of the “Baltic Industrial Symbiosis” project are named.

We finalized applications reviewing for participants of the Baltic Industrial Symbiosis in March 2020. The next step is screening, combining into symbiotic chains, finding effective solutions for waste proceeding and finding for the cost-efficient resources. So, who are the participants and are interested in industrial symbiosis?

More than half of the participants are from food processing industry. Companies are concerned with organic wastes problem and look for the option of its utilization and proceeding. Within the BIS members there are also other representatives of agro-industrial sector – fertilization producers, feed producers, meat processing plant, mining industry company and even trading and entertainment complex. Now we will say some words about each member of the Project and discover why the idea of industrial symbiosis was accepted by those companies.

Danone Russia
A world leader in four businesses: Essential Dairy and Plant-Based Products, Early Life Nutrition, Medical Nutrition and Waters.
Sustainable development – is a priority of Danone. Company cuts a consumption of electricity and water on its 15 plants in Russia and decreases CO2 emission, sorts waste and hands its over for processing. Danone looks forward to making package of own products more environment friendly and runs different projects on cutting food waste. Food waste became a focus of the company for this year – Danone tries to minimize wastes and supports legislative proposals in this field. At the same time company hopes that screening within the BIS project would find some other options for a further sustainable development of the company.


Fazer group
Another food company among the BIS project members is Fazer group. The company operates in 9 countries and exports its products to 40 countries. When Karl Fazer started his busines in 1891 his mission was Food with Purpose. Nowadays this vision is a basement of corporate strategy and in line with the United Nations Global Compact sustainability – is a key area.


Bushe
Bushe bakeries and restaurants decided to join the Project as they have anticipated sustainable development ideas for years. Ekaterina Aksenova, environment friendliness project manager stated the company “Looks for additional measures that can help to cut an environmental footprint. We practice waste separate collection and processing and our aim is to cut usage of disposable cutlery”.
Like any other food company Bushe produces a large amount of organic wastes and coffee pulp. There is a problem to proceed it as Russian legislation restricts its export and there is a lack of local proceeding factories. Bushe joined the BIS project with understanding that this is an only option to find associates who are interested in effective waste processing technologies.


Münhell brewery
Münhell - is a brewery launched in 2009 that produce more than 100 000 liters of beer per month on the newest and high-technology production and bottling lines completed with automatic performance management system. Within the “Baltic Industrial Symbiosis” project Münhell management looks for an opportunity to proceed brewer’s grains, and water with yeast.


Severnaya Krevetka
A unique Russian food start-up that launched an aquafarm development in North-West Russia in 2018 being a member of “Ingria” business incubator. Now several broods of king prawns were delivered to restaurants and food retails of Saint-Petersburg. Representatives of “Severnaya Krevetka” notice that “Symbiotic approach allows to cut expenses and resources consumption and to make a production more effective and environment friendly. We are open for the collaboration!”


Kronidov
Company produces ready to eat meals for tourists since 2014 in Saint-Petersburg. Side products of the production processes could be used in feed production industry. Kronidov is looking for partners how could process wastes and associates of zero-waste production.


NORD PULP
NORD PULP produces and sales potting soils and fertilizers under the brands Terra Vita Zhivaya Zemlya, Terra Nova, Sad Chudes, Ideal, New Ideal, Raduga and Ispolin. All these brands won international awards – Zolotoy Znak Kachestva (Gold quality Mark), Russian Mark, Golden Award for Technology and Quality new millennium award (Switzerland) and The American Golden Certificate of Quality.
Company owns a turf development site and extracts high-moor pear to produce peat soil and organo-mineral fertilizers. Company looks partners who can use crop residues that are a side product of turf development.


Tosnensky Mixed Feed Factory
Tosnensky Mixed Feed Factory also counts to find new partners within the BIS project. It produces total mixed rations and protein-vitamin-mineral supplements, premixes and pre-starter feed for farm animals – poultry, pigs, rabbits, horses, cattle, sheep and goats of all ages. It produces extruded, grained feed and crumbles also with a unique recipe, considering breed, housing conditions, nutrition conditions and other factors.
Anton Surushkin, Sales manager of the factory, tells that “Factory production is aimed on saving all the natural components for feed. Products are environment friendly and meet the expectations of the farmers who take care of the health of livestock and good gain per grazing day”. The company looks for raw materials suppliers and packaging processors.


Meat processing plant “Tosnenskiy”
Founded in 2004. One of the largest meat processing plants in North-West Russia.
It uses state-of-the-art equipment and highly efficient electrical power system, high-quality raw materials. Sanitary supervision meets the highest European regulations. Thus, the plant produces high-quality pork, beef, meat products and by-products within all-Union State Standard. The plant tries to find a new solution for pork blood proceeding to make own production more effective and environment friendly.


Karelprirodresurs
Leader of the mining industry in break-stone production of the Republic of Karelia also makes geological surveys and open-cut mining designing. Karelprirodresurs produces more than 20% of break-stone in Karelia – that is up to 8 million tons per year. Company uses leading edge technologies and follows circular economy principles. Within the BIS project Karelprirodresurs looks for the partners who can help with waste processing – stone dust at first. It can be used as a construction material or for road sanding.


Trading and entertainment complex “Grand Canyon”
By people choice “Grand Canyon” is the third mall in Saint-Petersburg. Almost 100% of its space is rented by national and international retail networks. Annual footfall grows every year that leads to waste growth. Within the BIS project “Grand Canyon” management hopes to organize a separate waste collection.


BIOCAD

Enviro
Enviro - is a Russian engineering company founded in 2012 working in the field of wastes safe disposal, dust cleaning and gas treatment facilities and green energy. Technologies that have been developed by the company allows to get heat and electric energy from solid, liquid, paste and gas like wastes and silt and can be used in medical facilities, housing and public utilities, industrial facilities, water and wastewater plants, mining, oil and gas industries, paper and paperboard industries that care about recycling.



All the participants of the BIS project contribute to a creation of information ecosystem for provident and responsible companies. Thus, there is an eco-community inside industries. The Project helps to exchange the ideas, research and development plans and gives access to a database of European practices, legislation issues and, first of all, partners capabilities. This a key for a successful collaboration – effective industrial symbiosis.
